Go! St Louis 1/2 (race recap)

Go! St Louis 1/2- 4/10/11
State- 11/50
Temps- low 90s, sunny, and humid
One of my high school friends / cc teammates, Heidi, lives in St. Louis, so it was a no brainer for B and I to choose this race since we had a place to stay for free with our own tour guide!

Lately B and I have been trying to get to our destination cities early so we have time to explore, this was no exception. B came to pick me up around 6:15, on the road by 6:30, no real traffic or hold ups and we arrived at Heidi's around 11:30am .

Knowing that this race was 17,000+ runners, we head to the expo immediately as to HOPEFULLY avoid the large crowds.

 Welcome to the Expo
B, Heidi, and myself

For packet pickup I got lucky and  my lady who gave me my bib must have known that this was not my first rodeo and go into the whole time chip spiel or how to put on a bib etc. (I hate that)  so it was a breeze! We turn the corner to check out the expo and get our bags and shirts and this is what we see:
Reminds me of how congested Disney's Princess expo was, so I told myself to just take a quick peak. I got a few Lara Bar samples (my favorite go to pre race food), talked to a representative from the Geist 1/2 marathon since I'm running that in May, and then met back up with Heidi and B to leave (one of the shortest times spend at an expo) We did get a neat recyclable black race tote (not pictured) as well as these BRIGHT GREEN race shirts (first garment of clothing I own to be this color)

After leaving expo we decide to take a tour of the Schafly Brewery and have lunch.
Upon going inside, we find out that this is just the restaurant for Schafly, the touring plant is in a different part of town, darn. Still decide to eat lunch there, and the German inside of me got super excited by sauerkraut and brats- POOR POOR POOR decision on my part, and I will pay for it race day

Finish up lunch, head to the actual tour plant....

When we get there a man tells us there are only 2 spots left for the next tour (there are 3 of us), AND that you cannot wear open toed shoes on the tour- crazy because I've been on SEVERAL tours and have never heard of that rule. Since we are all wearing flip flops, we leave and decide to instead check out Annheiser-Bush.

Entrance to Annheiser-Busch

This place is HUGE- they have a whole 'campus' of different buildings, even have their own credit union across the street just for all the employees. I was super excited because this tour actually takes you outside and through all the grounds of the plant. (plus i hear you get to see some Clydesdale horses)
Once we get inside we find out that ALL tours for the rest of the day are filled up. We just can't win today apparently. We are at least able to look at a few things inside, so we take a look around, and I actually learned quite a bit on information.

Next week B and I have a race in Kansas, and since we have to drive through St. Louis to get there, we decided that we would make a stop overnight in St. Louis after the race and come back and actually do a tour.

Naturally the next touristy place to visit is the infamous St. Louis Arch!

I look so tiny in comparison!!
Had to touch the arch.

Of course with all the luck we were having previously in the day, it would only make sense that when we were  trying to get a tour inside the arch, that all time slots were sold out for the entire day (ARGH!!) One more thing to add to the list for accomplishing next weekend when there are not all the out of town racers.

We decide to walk around the surrounding park, and head to the old Riverfront to grab some water and a beer (its unbearably hot)

We go inside the bar / restaurant (name escapes me) and I have the best beer I have ever tasted. It was their own brand winter lager and the bartender described it as: butternut squash, pumpkin vienna, amber- it had slight cinnamon and nutmeg undertones and tasted like thanksgiving or christmas (couldn't decide which) Of course they didn't sell any bottles for me to take home, but I was informed I could buy a growler at their other location (which I'm contemplating doing next weekend)

Head back to Heidis to relax for a few hours before going back out for dinner. I wish I would have taken photos, but her neighborhood can only be described as everything I would look for if I were to live in the city. Within 2 blocks are rows of different restaurants with outdoor patios, bars, boutiques, antique shops, coffee places and gorgeous neighborhoods to walk through.

I'm still full from my large late lunch, so dinner is small salad with chicken and a side of pomme frittes. At this point I'm ABSOLUTELY exhausted and we head back to her place to lay out our gear for the morning and get our bed ready. B and I were nervous because we had to share a pull out couch- I told her I don't cuddle before races... I could see the look of disappointment on her face haha.  Lights out around 10:00 in hopes to be re-energized for race morning.

RACE DAY

The race starts @ 7am, we have the half fanatic / MM/ 50 stater photo @ 6:25, so we figured as long as we got on the 6am metrolink near the start line, we'd make the photo.
Made it to the metro link with a few minutes to spare...
Obviously we were NOT the only ones to think of this brilliant idea. Of course there were quite a bit of others waiting along with us, but when the cars pulled up, it was already packed from the previous stop. Somehow everyone managed to cram in there, I was just thankful that this was before the race so no one was sweaty and stinky yet
this picture doesn't do it justice.

Once we unload we are trying to make our way to the photo meetup spot, however Heidi realized she wasn't sure where the soldier memorial was, so we had to wait to find someone who looked like they were from there to point us in the right direction. When we get there Dave greeted me by name and gave me a hug, which was awesome considering how popular he is in the running world. He introduced us to another fanactic (i'm so bad bc i forgot her name) and we chatted while waiting for more people to arrive.

Everyone is accounted for and the joys of lining everyone up begins, large group this time around
I really need to invest in a shirt!

Dave had just the fanatics take a photo- we're such a smaller group!!

Afterward we start walking toward the start line- B and H were ready to go to their corrals, since they weren't in my same letter I decided to let them go on ahead so I could stretch more. Before the Little Rock 1/2 I had stretched pretty throughly, and coincidently enough, I had virtual no knee pain, so I thought hoped there was a correlation. In my process of stretching I witnessed the Bud Light marathon from above photo, I HAD to have a photo with her
no idea how she was able to run in that.

After a few more minutes of stretching I decide to make my way to corral B to mentally prepare for the race. I was nervous because it was getting hot, there were some long hills, my stomach wasn't feeling the best, and as always, wanted my knee to hold up.
slow moving crow toward start line

all the pacers (men & women) wore the sparkly hearts skirts w/ their pacing shirt- hilarious
view of start line / arch from my starting position.

Once the announcer says "go go go" to designate the start (which was quite annoying) it takes a few minutes to actually cross the start line. After the hills on last weeks race, my game plan was to go out super easy so I didn't get tired too quickly.

The first mile I was feeling great, I was at a comfortable pace, my knee didn't bother me at all, and it flew by rather quickly. Mile 1 was 8:34- just goes to show that whether I go out fast, or go out slow, my body just likes an 8:30 mile pace. Somewhere between mile 1 and 2 it felt as though someone had turned on a sauna! I was dripping with sweat, which worried me since it was so early in the race. There was a gatorade and water station right before 2 mile mark and I actually stopped to get some. Normally I wait until 2nd station around mile 4 before I hydrate, but today it was definitely a need.

Shortly after mile 2, my stomach went into full rebellion mode- for those of you who have experienced this in a race, you can imagine how uncomfortable I was feeling, especially with the added heat. I saw a row of porta potties (hallelujah) a little after mile 3, and I HAD to stop. After losing over 3 minutes waiting for a bathroom in my Women's 1/2 in September, I've never stopped at a porta potty due to not wanting to lose so much time. Today, it was a necessity. I wish I could say I felt better afterward, but I didn't, infact I think it put me on 'slow mode'- I noticed my stride seemed to be shorter and I was getting sooooooo tired. My face moisturizer was now mixed in with my sweat, thus burning my eyes, one more frustration to add to my mind.

Around mile 4 we passed the Cardinals stadium, I stopped to take a photo and felt so much better for a few minutes that I decided this might be one of my run/walk races

After those 'few minutes' were up, I started feeling like crap again. Is it the heat? Am I dehydrated? Did I get food poisoning? All these thoughts were racing through my head. I wasn't sure what exactly was going on, but I made sure that at every aide station I had 2 gatorades and 2 waters.

Miles 5-8 seemed like it was all uphill- in actuality, probably only 2 of those miles really were. I had read there was going to be a station around mile 6, so when I knew we were nearing close, I picked up my pace so I could get some water and take my gu. The 6 mile marker came and went, no water station :( We finally got to the top of the hill, turned right, had a straight flat part for 100 yds, then had to make a left for another hill- still no aide station. FINALLY at mile 6.5 we reach it and I have never been so desperate to suck down a gu during a race. Due to extreme heat it was pure liquid vs. a gel- different texture, but still go the job done. Normally a gu takes about 15 minutes for me to feel its effects- today was not one of those days, because I never felt better.

I hate admitting this, but it got to the point where I felt so bad, I literally was unable to run more than 2 minutes.... 2 minutes??!!!?? Apparently I wasn't the only one because I had never seen so many people walking, which in turn encouraged me to do more walking. Me and this other girl kept leap frogging eachother so I didn't feel so bad. The sun was taking its toll on me- I could feel the sunburn developing on my face and triceps- one more thing to add to my discomfort.

Mile 8.5 came, grabbed another gu, and took it along with dumping 2 glasses of water on my head- whew much better. Around this point I start to see more and more EMS people carrying people off the course and giving people fluids- well at least I'm not that bad off. Literally a minute or so after thinking that, my stomach decided it needed to remind me it still wasn't feeling well.I'm only a little into mile 9 and there are no bathrooms in sight, crap!

My favorite running song- "Through the fire and flames" by dragon force came on, since its a 7min 30 sec song I make a promise to myself that if I can run the whole thing, no walk breaks, that will get me to the 10th mile, and hopefully bathrooms because its near the turnaround. Sure enough it does take me to the 10th mile, and a little after that, there was a line of porta potties- I'm pretty sure I sprinted faster in their direction than I did the entire race. If luck would have it, I think that made matters worse. I was able to get another round of water and gatorade, but to no avail it didn't help.

I'm not sure if the gatorade upset my stomach, or its just the heat with very little breeze and absolute no shade, but at mile 11.5 I keeled over and vomitted. AWESOME. An EMS person came over on his scooter and asked if I was okay, gave me some water, and I said I was still going to finish. Why am I so stubborn?

I've heard the last part of your race is supposed to be run with heart, I would say that this particular race definitely qualified. Its 90+ degrees, I'm soaked from sweat and pouring water over myself, I've already had 2 bathroom bouts, I've vomitted and feel that there may be more to come, my legs are tired from the hills- I have nothing left to keep me going except the sheer satisfaction that I pushed through it.

Mile 12 came- under normal circumstances I'll either pick up the pace, OR at least tell myself no walking since I have one mile left- neither of these were the case. We hit a final turn and then it was a straightaway to the finish line in the distance. Having both the luxury of a garmin to tell me my expected time (7 more minutes)+ knowledge from previous races that the finish line is farther than it appears, I don't bother picking up my pace. With 5 minutes left I decide that instead of going faster, I'll just open my stride (which obviously will make me go faster) I don't know which is worse, not knowing where the finish line is located, or seeing it in the distance for a long time as a constant tease.

No idea how I was able to pass people, but I did. I immediately walked over to the waters and grabbed 3 bottles- 1 to dump on my head which I did immediately, 1 to drink for now, 1 for later. I got my medal and then my after race refreshment bag (such a smart idea vs. having a ton of stuff to carry in your arms). Me, B, & H had decided to meet back up at the family meet up letter G, so I went over there. I gorged on my 3 bananas ( i knew i needed it) then stretched and waited for B.

As soon as she arrived I told her I had to use the bathroom one last time, and FINALLY it made me feel better. We laughed at how ridiculous the race was and she let me use her phone so I could call my folks while we wait for H to finish. Mom told me she was tracking me online and saw how much I slowed down in between the check in points and was worried so she had called me (normally I do run with my phone, but today I decided to take my camera) I guess one positive is that I finished 1 minute faster than my predicted time based on my 11th mile check in time. Woo.

H finds us, we take an 'after' photo, then head to the metrolink so we can head back to her place to shower

We found out later that the course officials actually closed down the marathon at around the 9 mile mark due to extreme heat and not enough EMS officials to tend to all the people needing medical attention. All marathoners had to finish up the half marathon at that point- talk about a major bummer.

On the upside of things, once I cooled down and got more liquids in me, I felt fine. I wasn't sore at all, and I had zero knee pain!

B and I showered, grabbed some star bucks, then hit the road back home.

State # 11 completed- St. Louis definitely conquered me vs. the other way arround

Weekend with the folks

Although I LOVE living in Nashville, it does have some drawbacks when it comes to my family. I haven't seen them since Christmas, which isn't too long, however since both brothers live close to my parents, I always feel like I'm the odd one out and I'm missing all this family time.
Since I recently moved, my parents were wanting to come down and check out my new place and help me decorate and purchase new furniture! Due to both my travels with races, and my dad's travels with work, the ONLY weekend my parents come could down to visit was this past weekend.

Naturally I had a race, so upon completion of my horrible Clemson Easter 1/2 on saturday, I had to drive back to Nashville, 6 hrs, to meet up with them for the rest of weekend. I'm sure I don't have to explain that 6 hrs in a car after running a race causing your RIGHT knee and hip to be sore, is less than desirable.

I actually did beat my parents to Nashville, and as I was pulling up to my house I was greeted by some guy who proceeded to tell me that my house flooded earlier that morning- wait WHAT?!?! Apparently one of the toilets was backed up, spewing black sewage everywhere, and they had to rip up a lot of the flooring and baseboards- AWESOME. At least everything is being covered since it was obviously a problem resulting from the previous owner.

I proceeded inside, ignoring the gentlemen ripping everything up and quickly cleaned my room,  and got ready for the afternoon / evening. Once parents arrived, I  gave them the grand tour of my new home, and much to my liking, they agreed it was great (minus the flood) One of my 2 big missions for the weekend was to get a dresser, and a new bed- off to the stores we went, followed by dinner and drinks @ Saffire in 'the factory' located in Franklin not too far from my place.
For whatever reason I didn't take a photo, but I had:
CHIMICHURRI SKIRT STEAK
Herb & Garlic-Rubbed Grilled Skirt Steak.  Served with Roasted Corn Salsa, Smoked Poblano Peppers, Onions and Cherry Tomatoes.  ~ delicious
Dinner with mom & dad

After a great meal, we attempted to walk around inside The Factory, but apparently all the shops close at 5pm (locally owned), so on our way out we saw this little gem....
Mom and Dad

Ignore the fact you can see right up my dress

We do some more window shopping, yet pretty much put everything off for Sunday- call it a night and head to bed.
Up EARLY next morning, to breakfast @ Pucketts- I absolutely LOVE breakfast buffets- especially if the bacon is crispy, it was perfect :-)
My mom and I both LOVE to find deals, i.e. where I inherit my great affinity for thrift stores. After seeing how I transformed a night stand I bought from Good Will for $9.99, she was itching to find a dresser we could restore w/ paint & knobs.
From drab....
 To fab!

My dad was a trooper and drove us all around Nashville hitting up thrift stores for our quest- sadly we had no luck in the dresser department, however I did snag a mirror and I came across this lovely beauty....
For all those who haven't caught on, I have a slight Elvis fascination

Eventually we did give up on our thrift store quest and conceded and went to one of my least favorite stores in the entire world- Wal Mart. Am I the only one that despises this store so much?!?!? Surprisingly enough, I did find a desk, 2 shelving units, full length mirror, and a small dresser (major score) We dropped my dad off at my place so he could put together all the furniture, and mom and I went on a quest to get me a new Queen bed!

One of my roommates suggested a mattress store that was having a HUGE sale, so we checked it out and fell in love. I found one that was PERFECT- mattress was firm, but it had foam pillow top so it was still soft. Our salesman randomly enough happened to be from my hometown, Huber Heights Ohio, graduated from same HS, so he cut us a deal. The set was $1200, I told him I really wasn't looking to spend over $1000 so if he had anything that was in that price range I would probably buy. He did one better- he gave me the set, free delivery, and 2 bamboo memory foam pillows all for $899!! I get it delivered on Thursday, super excited.

What also excites me is hopefully by thursday my kitchen walk through will be cleared up to make room for the delivery guys---- due to the flooding its currently in this state:
and to get to my room you have to enter through this:

Although I did love playing in forts as a kid, having to unzip and rezip everytime I walk through is not my idea of fun anymore.

By the time we returned from our bed  and other room supplies extravaganza, dad had put together ALL my furniture- literally saving me HOURS of time for when they left (thanks dad!) Since we had bought him steak n shake to eat so he could still work, mom and I were hungry and I took her to one of my favorite bars- Mojo Brewhouse South- 70 beers on tap- yes please! (and then quite a bit more by the bottle) Since it was Sunday, technically you can break your lenten promise, so I did get some ranch to dip my fries in, it was glorious.
Since my parents got a hotel room right across from where I work, it made sense to stay with them sunday night so I could have breakfast with them and then pop over to work- thats exactly what I did. I felt bad because the entire weekend was literally spent racing around buying new stuff for my room, so I didn't get to show them much of Nashville (more reason for them to visit again- next time hopefully with my brothers since they have yet to visit- I know you're reading this Eric, hint hint)
Mom and I before heading to work and they take off

All in all, it was a VERY productive weekend- got to finish my 10th state for half marys, spent some quality time with my folks, and now I have added the following to my room:
  • breadspread, sheets, pillows
  • queen mattress, box spring, pillows, and bed frame
  • 1 dresser
  • 1 desk
  • 2 shelving units
  • 2 mirrors (one hanging and one full length)
  • 4 wicker storage containers
  • bathroom & kitchen towels
  • lots of other random stuff!
Starting to feel a lot more cozy in my new place :)

Clemson's Easter Bunny 1/2 (Race Report)

State 10/50 (1/5 way done- woo)
Weather mid 60s-low 70s

Originally when we were picking out drivable states, we had chosen an April 16th race in Columbia, SC. Few months back I came across the Clemson Easter 1/2 and thought an 'easter' race could be fun, it was super cheap, and as an added bonus, it was about 2 hours closer to us than Columbia- triple score!

B was doing her first double header weekend, racing  in Talladega, AL ( I completed Huntsville, AL  back in Nov) on Sunday, so we decided to drive separate so I could leave after race back to Nashville. Met her and M (her boyfriend) early in the morning, and the idea was I would just follow them to our hotel.

All went to plan until about 20 minutes outside of Atlanta; I have a tendency to daydream while driving long distances, and unfortunately it makes paying attention to details such as making sure you follow the same car, become more difficult. Somewhere along the way I had passed B without realizing it, and upon checking my rear mirror, I noticed she was quite a distance behind me. I tried slowing down, but as luck would have it, she actually got off at an exit- CRAP! Maybe that wasn't her, because surely she would have called??
I tried reaching her on her cell- voicemail- eek!  Thank goodness my phone has GPS- plugged in the hotel and it told me exactly where to go. A few minutes later B calls and apologizes bc M was on a business call so she couldn't answer her phone- her GPS was taking her a back way, but both of ours said we'd arrive at the hotel in about 2 hours.
2 hours later I arrive at the hotel, call B, shes 30-45 minutes away. To pass the time, I  decide to go exploring and come across one of my favorite stores- a thrift store!!! I literally could spend hours in thrift stores using my imagination to turn someone's junk into my very own treasure. The highlight of my trip:
so its a pig hat that says 'party animal'- I know this seems silly, but it is absolutely PERFECT for the Flying Pig 1/2 we have scheduled for May 1st. If I can make it at least a few miles with it on, my parents will be around to catch it as I throw it to them.

Venture back to hotel, check in, then make our way to Clemson's campus and surrounding areas to kill some time. Although I didn't really take many pictures of the campus, I will say that it was gorgeous! I managed to score an awesome parking spot so we could walk around their 'downtown.'

All 3 of us were greek back in college, so we went to their greek store, and I was elated to see my sorority there, so I had to be dorky and do some photo oppty.
I was laughing at how excited I was

thoroughly impressed w/ how much Zeta merchandise they had

Finally we decided to get some food in our bellies- I'm pretty sure I went a little overboard on the 'carb loading' this time around- but since I normally don't eat this way I won't feel too bad.
6 slices of garlic bread, bacon burger, fries, and of course beer :)
3 bags of gummy bears (yes i ate them by myself- 1360 calories of wax and sugar)

After our dinner, B and I were wiped. We drove part of the course and then headed back to the hotel and just laid in bed watching TV. M secretly asked B if we were just going to stare at eachother all night (it was 7pm) and she told him, this is what we do the night before. He went to the bar next door, and her and I put on "The Yes Man" and were both asleep by 8:30.

RACE DAY
We had to do race day pick up so even though the race didn't start till 8, we wanted to leave hotel by 6:30 so we can get our packet around 7 and still have time to stretch and such. Woke up at 5:30, did my race day ritual (its a secret), rolled out my quads, then left for the race.
I've noticed that we generally match in an opposite way- my top and her skirt, her top and my skirt- ONE of these days we'll be identical
We make our way to the Clemson Botanical Gardens where the race start/finish is located and also where we need to get our bib and shirt, however, there is NOTHING marking where we are supposed to go once we get into the park. We drove around for 15 or so minutes until we stumbled upon an extremely small sign pointing us in the right direction.

The race was put on by the Clemson Running Club, so everything was on a smaller scale. Our race shirt was cotton (cotton is rotton), the only thing in our 'goody bag' was 3 flyers for other races, we had to wait until someone came with the key to unlock the bathrooms (which was 4 stalls), there was no chip timing, and there would be a grand total of 193 runners for the half marathon!
This is take #7- showing off our shirts w/ our bunny ears... which were a big hit by the way.

Although it was supposed to be 70 degrees for the finish, it was still a little chilly at the start, so I put on some tunes and started dancing / stretching / warming up, all while singing. I think I embarrassed M a little bit, but I told him its not like I'll see anybody here ever again.
Near the start line we saw 'Sprinkles'- the Dunkin Doughnut's doughnut....
Needless to say, she was a huge hit! They made an announcement of how the race was going to start and end, as well as telling us about little cardboard 'eggs' you may find along the course and can redeem for a prize- only 1 egg per person to make it fair.

I throw my coat to M, go to turn on my ipod, and its dead- seriously? It has been charging on my lap top for at least 5 days, how is it not working at all?!?! This very same thing happened to me while I was waiting in my corral at the New Orleans 1/2- at least both then and now I have my phone as a back up. I throw my ipod to M and connect headphones to my phone and store in my spi belt- catastrophe diverted!

The police sirens go off, initiating our race start...
The first 1/4 mile was downhill and flat, thus causing me to go out too fast- I'm still learning pacing, but I generally like to do between 8:20-8:30 first mile, that is what is comfortable and I'm able to maintain around there for the first half of my race. A few minutes into the race I was breathing really hard and looked down at my garmin- 8:00min mile pace- TOO FAST. I know this sounds crazy, but literally the first 5 minutes of my race can make or break me- even if I hold back just a little bit, I will naturally pick up the speed and just run a faster race- although I do know this about myself, its so hard to keep that in mind when you're at the race start with all the adrenaline pumping. I drastically slowed down so I can hit an 8:30 min first mile, which I did, but it didn't help much for my breathing.

I knew where the first mile marker was on the course due to driving part of it the night before, so when my garmin told me it was mile 1, I was a little thrown off because I didn't hit the race mile 1 marker for another 2 minutes. Great.... one of THOSE races where it isn't marked properly. My bunny ears fell off, and coincidently that is when I started to fall apart- 1.5 miles into the race.
My knee held up great up until 1.5 miles, then the pain set in. I think that, in combination with all the hills, smaller pool of runners, and the fact that the course was so off in terms of distance, I just decided I didn't care.
Miles 2-5ish
Nothing too exciting here. We run throughout dorms / neighborhoods- KILLER hills here. At this point I said screw it and decided to run for 5, walk for 1 combo- it seemed to be working pretty good for my knee, so I kept that up.

Miles 5-7
Right around mile 5, ran into 'super fan', an older man wearing a black fleece and orange hat. I call him super fan because other than him, the crowd support was non existent. 193 runners total meant that the only people alongside the course were family of runners here and there. SF asked me where did my bunny ears go- I managed to tell him I got rid of them a few miles back- was touched he remembered me! Miles 6 and 7 were spent alongside the river
Although its gorgeous, the grass / dirt were not kind to my knees and ankles. That in combination with having to run on some trails, I.WAS.EXHAUSTED. By the time I hit mile 7, SF spotted me and told me I was falling behind- gee thanks MR. (although he did say it in positive way.) After that I looked down at my garmin and I saw a 10 min pace which was disheartening so I decided to not pay attention to that and switched my screen to total time vs. split time so I wouldn't get too preoccupied with exactly how slow I was going. It was starting to get super hot, and unfortunately water stations were sparse. I tried to take my gu at the water station right before mile 7, however I didn't have enough water to wash down my Cliff mocha w/ caffeine so I only did a tiny bit.

Mile 8 - somewhere here there happened to be another water station so I asked for 2 cups so I could take my gu and also hydrate. Water had never tasted so good before. Majority of this mile was spent running by Clemson University,  which was relatively flat! I wanted to take some pictures, but it is such a hassle to try to get my phone out of my spibelt, take the photo, then put it back in, so I took mental photos instead :)

Miles 9 & 10 I got a 2nd wind- part of it may have been my gu kicking in, or that pretty much all of mile 9 was spent either downhill or flat.  I'm pretty sure that only allowing myself to run for 5 minutes at a time was becoming too easy, but either way I sped up and passed a few people finally!

Miles 11 & 12 Of course leading up to mile 11 marker it was all uphill, which meant more walking. I did speed up to catch up to this older gentleman who I noticed was wearing a Garmin. I asked him if his Garmin was off-  he informed me his watch said 10.5 miles (we were about 20 feet in front of mile 11) wow this is a HUGE difference. How is it possible to be THAT far off your distance?!?! I know they used map my run to measure, which according to them was 13.2 miles, however you have to zoom in as much as you can when using this website to make sure you are infact marking all the right turns on roads and such. Guess I could be a race director if these people can do it. Around 11.5 miles I spotted SF- I chuckled and shouted "you're everywhere!!" to which he replied "since this is a small race I want to help you guys out as much as I can"- thought that was awesome of him. I didn't realize how much spectator support really does motivate me. Aside from almost getting hit by a car (it came within one foot of me despite the other lane in the road being open) nothing else eventful happened. I stopped at the what I assumed would be the last water station and grabbed two more cups of water- why am I so thirsty?!?!

Mile 13- Generally when I pass the 12 mile marker, I do try to speed up for the last mile. Considering I had NO IDEA where I was in relation to the finish line + not knowing if it was truly going to be 1 mile left, I just kept on trucking along at my semi slow pace. We entered the same wooded paved trail that was the first mile, so I knew we were getting close, however could hear NO cheering which would be expected at a finish line, so again I didn't speed up. After several minutes I figured I had to be close, I opened my stride, past 2 guys, got hawked by some girl out of NO WHERE, and finally saw ONE, yes ONE spectator that said the finish line was around the upcoming turn. Hallelujah!!! Go into turbo mode, almost catch the girl, and cross the line.

I grab a few orange slices, a banana, and few cups of water, and get the car keys from M so I can quickly get on my flip flops before B crosses the line. I literally just came  from the car back to where M was standing and I could see B's bright magenta skirt coming into view- cheered her on and then met her by water station where she was discussing with another guy about the short course. We all had 12.75 miles via our garmin, WOW! All I have to say is thank goodness it was short because I was so done after crossing that line, I don't know how much more my knees / feet could take.

Afterward M asked us what we thought of the race- here is our reaction
If i wasn't holding other stuff in my left hand, it would have received 2 thumbs down.
Not wanting to end on a bad note, we did take a better after race photo- obviously you now know these smiles are super fake, but at least we're happy its over.
Normally I would post a photo of the medal with my stats underneath- the medal is nothing worth showing a close up of, basically a cheap medal with a sticker of the same 'bunny photo' from the top of this post just stuck to the medal. At this point, I expected something along those lines. As a side note, B and I never saw a single cardboard egg, so no prizes for us!

Immediately following this picture we headed back to hotel, showered, then her and M headed to Talladega for her next 1/2, and I made the trek back to Nashville where I would be meeting up with my parents for the rest of the weekend.

State #10- done. Would I recommend this to anyone else??? Unless you live in the Clemson area, absolutely not.
Time 2:03:16 (keep in mind it was only 12:75 miles, so time would have been that much slower)
