Looking back at Ragnar Cape Cod

Apparently there was a time at the beginning of May that I ran in a Ragnar Cape Cod relay- I know here we are 9 whole weeks after the fact and I'm just now writing about it? Truth is, I kind of lost my running / blogging mojo. Combine that with the fact that this was my 11th overnight relay, and all the recaps run together--- I ran a lot, I got very little sleep, I ate like crap, I had a great time with strangers, it was a blast etc etc.

Despite the traditional similarities that come with running a relay, there were 3 major differences for this one that made this a 'newer' experience  for me.

1. Everyone on this team was new to me.
When I told my friends I was doing a relay in Cape Cod with a bunch of people I didn't know, I consistently got the eyebrow lift followed by the question "how in the world did you even find out about them?" I guess with all the traveling and meeting up with strangers I just don't think twice about it anymore, but since not everyone has reached that level of familiarity as I have, here is how it went down:

I joined the team by responding to a facebook post looking for 2 more runners my friend Julia put out there. Julia and I met through blogging and then ran on an ultra team for Northwest Passage together. I also recognized Nancy's name since I've been following her blog the last several years, but everyone else, despite most blogging, I was unfamiliar with.
Once I was 'officially'  part of the team, Betsy reached out since she also happens to live in Nashville. We met up once for lunch and then agreed to get on the same R/T flights to East Coast to keep each other company.
Betsy and I showing how Nashville girls have some hops!

Unfortunately a few weeks prior to race day Julia had to back out due to family commitments, so that left me with 1 person I barely knew going into the long weekend. No big deal- it actually makes the trip more interesting because you are constantly learning about your teammates the entire time. I guess this could go either way in the good / bad department, so I lucked out!

And in running order--- Meet the team!

2. I was the only Ragnar Veteran on the team
I think there may have been some of the folks in van 1 who have run a relay before, but this was their first time experiencing a Ragnar. Despite trying to figure out the logistics of everything (huge shout out to Betsy for making this all come together so smoothly), this was a huge plus in my book. I think sometimes we do things so many times we become de-sensitized to them--- thats how I've become with racing lately (although by taking this huge break I'm hoping my first race back I'll get the butterflies again). It was incredibly refreshing to have everyone be genuinely excited about the entire experience with all the questions, enthusiasm, cheering, and photo taking. I strongly believe that it's possible to feed off other's energy, and they kept me fueled the entire weekend.  If you want to see their take on their first relay, here are some of their recaps.

3.  I have officially rode out the 'no longer have to train' bus
Ever since I made the decision to run a 1/2 in every state, I've literally had multiple half marathons every single month the past few years with only a few months exception where it was just 1. This meant that I could take several weeks of dialed back mileage and never really lose too much of my endurance. There were a few times where I struggled for maybe a week, but it all came back. This weekend was a big reality check for me. Although I had purposely been taking it easy for 4 months leading up to the race, I guess I just didn't grasp how hard 10 miles could really feel when your body hasn't done double digits in months.
This was hands down the hardest relay for me physically. I was reminded of when I first got back into running 4 years ago- I could never get my breathing down, my form didn't feel natural, I was sore after every run and 'finding a groove' seemed impossible.
Who knew you could get THIS tight after 10 miles?!?

I have now lost everything I built over the last 3.5 years- stamina, speed, and most importantly- confidence in my abilities---- CRAP.  Although this was a wake up call that I need to get back on track, I'd be lying if I said I immediately was motivated to get back into the grind and come up with a plan to gain all that was lost. Instead, it made me realize that I need to enjoy time off now, because when I decide to train again, I'm going to have to go all in if I want to get back to the level where I last left off.

Now onto things I didn't learn, but were more re-affirmed:
The Cape is Beautiful

You can never have too many group photos

Running by yourself the entire relay stinks
My first two runs I didn't have a single kill. Occasionally I would get passed by someone, but other than that, it was just me and the road
This is what my last run looked liked....

and then finally caught up with people and had to photo it and send to the group text in the middle of my run

I've never been so excited to mark down kills before

I am a giant compared to some of my teammates (in all fairness, she's under 5'0)

There is a lot of history along the course- and this is just what we saw on our part of the run!
Mayflower, Plymouth Rock, structure surrounding Plymouth Rock
Pilgrim Monument

Tomb that marks the death of the first pilgrims

And lastly- the last 100m of both your last run, as well as the entire relay, is always full of smiles....

Another successful relay in the books- if you have the opportunity to go visit the Cape, I highly recommend. If you're able to run while there, even better. Both times I've ran the Cape I have gone in May--- first time it was bloody hot, this time it was pretty chilly. Weather is a grab bag there as the forecast changed every.single.day leading up to race day.

Next relay is the infamous HOOD TO COAST. I'm on an all ladies FAST team, so its about that time to get my butt in gear!!!

Have you run a relay before?
What is your favorite part?

Five for Friday

1. Contrary to what some people think, I actually eat pretty healthy. I don't blog about all the times I sit at home and stay in, so the perception is that I'm always out partying eating bar food. I also don't talk much about how I'm a nutritionist and know a ton about the content of food and what you need to eat in order to get which vitamins and minerals.... I could talk your ear off about all that stuff though. The reason I don't blog about all that is because I could go on forever about it. There are some blogs devoted to that type of content- if you have questions, great I will answer them, but helping people with their nutrition for 6 years got me burnt out on giving advice and listening to excuses, and I don't want to go down that road again.
This is what a typical week or 2 (depending on how much quantity I make, looks like) I haven't been in the mood much for meat, so aside from my ground chicken in the stuffed bell peppers, I've been really upping my veggie and quinoa intake. The more (natural) color my food has, the happier I am :)

2.  My friend Julia (who used to blog at Pain, Pride, and Perseverance) posted Tuesday night on Facebook they had 2 openings on the Cape Cod Ragnar Relay team this upcoming May. Thank goodness I happened to be cruising my newsfeed and responded within 5 minutes of her posting. I got in and they happened to find the 12th person as well-- woo woo. Team Name is Beauty and the Beast(s).

I haven't decided what I'm most excited about yet:
  • Crossing off another 'new to me' Ragnar off my list
  • Seeing and getting to run with Julia again (she was on my Ultra Beast Mode team)
  • Meeting Fancy Nancy for the first time even though I've been following her for years
  • Turns out this random pairing of people has someone from Nashville on it! Betsy who blogs at LiteralB is in my backyard. I know zero bloggers who are in my city so its exciting to make an IRL friend and then actually get to see her in the area. sidenote: I do have 2 IRL friends that I met who were Nashville bloggers- Jill H and Ashley. Jill stopped blogging and Ashley moved. Both were also on my Ultra Beast Mode team. (also on my header- one of my fav pics)

3.  Wednesday I joined Leah at a 'new to me' run group- "East Nasties" in East Nashville. I've been wanting to go for years, but its hard to get out of work and fight the traffic to make it there by 6. There were at least 60-70 runners here which I'm told is pretty small. It was nice to see quite a few runners I know, which means one of my goals of getting to know more local runners is working. Since the weather was cooler (high 30s) that apparently means I'm going faster without realizing it. We had a 3.5 mile route and within 1 mile I thought I was going to wet my pants.  My pace slowed drastically and one of my friends purposely ran 20 feet ahead of me to antagonize me to catch him. With half mile left to go Leah came back to look for me (shows you how fast she is) and I told her I might explode so she showed me where a public bathroom was- ecstasy. Finished the run in 7:37 pace ---what?!?! I seriously thought I was going 9s, but I'll take it!

4. After the run they were having free pints at Nashville Running Company as well as giving away entries to the Country Music 1/2. I hate this race so I decided I wasn't going to do it this year. I said that for past 2 years and then signed up last minute. This year its different because the race is the week after Easter and my family plans got switched around so we're celebrating it same day as the race. Now I don't have to worry about caving into peer pressure.  For those that are interested, here is the shirt this year. Medals are from last year, but I'm fairly confident it will be the same bulky pewter with a boring plain ribbon.

At NRC they also had a $50 clearance shoe section. I happened to luck out and find a pair of  Pearl Izumi trail shoes in my size!! I've been going back and forth with purchasing some trail shoes for Trail Atlanta, as well as other trail Ragnars / races I plan to do. Obviously this deal was too good to pass up (originally $115) so I bought the shoes and am sporting them today so I can break them in before a group trail run on Sunday.
So comfortable and LOVE the bright orange.

5.  My lease is up in June. I've moved every year I've lived here to a new house or apartment, always with a new roommate. Leah and I get along so great, and without sounding too sappy she has really enriched my life. For the first time since I've lived here, I've found someone I can tell ANYTHING to and don't need to worry about judgement. I trust her completely. She told me a few months ago she didn't want to continue to live in our apartment when the lease was up because, like me, she's always been in the same part of town and wants to expand. I live exactly 2 miles from work- it's been heaven this past year. My plan going into this year was that I would continue to rent for one more year, and if someone doesn't sweep me off my feet when my next lease is up, then I'll go ahead and purchase my first home. I really don't want to move, but I also don't want another roommate. I decided to take the plunge this week and start looking in a different part of town. I know sounds silly, but its a huge deal to me since Franklin has been my home for almost my entire time here (plus I've been spoiled with my lack of commute) I keep reminding myself that when I do buy, I can't afford Franklin anyway, so this is practice for the real deal. We've got 2.5 months to find something we both love- my requirements are at least 2 bed, 2 bath and ample closet space. Let the hunting begin!!!

Do you like to cook? What is your favorite veggie?
I have 3 I love preparing: brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, broccoli!

What is your trail shoe preference?
I haven't had trail shoes since high school, so I'm just venturing into this side of running

November Recap

Is it just me or did November whirl by? I sound like a broken record, but not a lot of running took place in my world. A typical week was 2 runs, 3 if lucky. 73% of the miles I ran were actual races this month vs. training runs. To my IRL friends they all think I'm "super runner" who spends all her free time training. Reality and in blog land, I'm a giant slacker! I know you're not supposed to compare yourselves to others, but I'm human so I do. I need everyone else's discipline to rub off on me!

On to the numbers!

Total Mileage:  62 miles- I really thought it would be higher, sside from being busy, I've noticed that with daylight's savings, I'm less motivated to run after work since it gets black by 5pm. Looks like I'll need to do more mid day lunch runs if I expect to get my

Highest Mileage week: 21- again thought this number would be higher, but for some reason I did more 3 mile runs vs. my traditional 5 during the week.

Races Planned / Completed: 4/4

Half Marathon # 48 (VA) Woodrow Wilson Bridge 1/2 (recap) One of my prettier and laid back runs

Ragnar Vail Lake Trail (recap) Probably the most exhausting and fun time dressed as Super Mario brothers.

State # 49 (OK) Route 66 1/2 Marathon (recap) Girls weekend, cold temperatures, awesome bling

Annual Turkey Trot 5 mile (recap) new PR* (technically my 5 miler in Ragnar was 4 min faster, but it was down a mountain so I'm not counting it)

New to Me: (Because you should always be trying something new)

  • Ran a trail race / trail Ragnar Relay- harder than I anticipated

  • Finally got to cross off my bucket list getting to see 2 animals that have been my favorites since a little girl. Cuteness overload!!! Got to see both, and many others, at San Diego Zoo.
A panda

Koala- fun fact- they spend large amounts of their time sleeping because they don't consume enough calories to do much else.
  • Out of the many times I've been to San Diego, I still failed at visiting one of my FAVORITE breweries. Finally was able to make that happen this month. Pure Happiness @ Green Flash - $1 each for those tasters :)

Accomplishments for November:
  • Survived trail running and liked it
    1. 5 mile PR- woot woot (37:08)
    2. Finished 2 states leaving me my grand finale in January!
    3. Finally finished 1st in our weekly trivia- landing us the "inner circle" seats at Thursday's Predator's Hockey game (closest to ice behind the players)

Current Book: Way behind the times but finished Gone Girl gone by Gillian Flynn - EXCELLENT read with a lot of twists in plot. Highly recommend.

    Current Excitements/ Obsessions:
    • Planning out activities in Hawaii
    • Christmas Shopping
    • Condensing my wardrobe to 'staple items' as well as cleaning house with other random stuff collected over years.
    Current Songs

    Portugal, The Man: Modern Jesus

    Current Treat
In Oklahoma I was all about cakeballs - bottom right is oreo flavored.
Then mom made a peppermint cheesecake with mint oreo crust (photo didn't turn out, sorry) Now I'm on a mission to figure out what I can possibly make with this amazing cookie.

    Current Goal (s):
    • Finish Christmas shopping in next week.
    • Organize and consolidate room
    • Place 3rd at Rudolph 5k this Friday-- I run it every year and it is HARD. Every.single.year I place 4th, so it would be nice to FINALLY get 3rd and receive a medal.

November Major takeaway: I realized I don't like to run in the dark by myself. I'm still incapable of balancing workouts and play on a whim, so December I am actually scheduling / pre-planning my workouts. Should be interesting to see how it goes.

    How was your November?

Ultra Relay in T-Minus 4 days

I leave for Boston Thursday evening so I can take part in my first ever relay running it ultra style- Race The Beach- MA

I'm so excited/ nervous, so be prepared for every post this week to be about this relay!

I wish I could say that I've been a good girl and have put in my mileage and I'm ready to dominate, however quite the opposite is true. I feel utterly unprepared. Although I'm faster than the last time I ran with these folk, Las Vegas Ragnar, running an ultra relay is a whole different beast. Last weekend I ran a back to back in Idaho and Portland. Although I had no real goals for either races, I really wanted to test out Portland and see how it would be running on dead legs- the fact that I PRed was definitely a shock, but it did give me the confidence that I needed to be able to pull this off. Now its just a matter of stretching out and getting some sleep to help with recovery which will determine how my legs, and ultimately this weekend goes.

Meet my team- "Animal Print Pants Outta Control!"
The boys: will be my 3rd relay with all of them!
Scottie- Hailing from Tampa Florida, Scott is the culprit who introduced me to relays. I've known him since age 13 and he was the first love of my life, so he's  always near and dear to my heart. Everyone on this relay, I know through him.
    First relay together- Ragnar TN
Craig- Flying out from Raleigh, NC, Craig is probably the most consistent of the male runners. Due to this we generally always give him the longest legs... he loves us for it. I'm generally known for being forgetful, however Craig takes the cake and makes me look good in those regards!

Kyle- Greensboro, NC and  by far the fastest on our team- generally always sub 7s. We call him the sweaty beast because he's fast and generally always runs shirtless- I assume this weekend will be no exception
Back when we ran Ragnar Vegas- most beautiful scenery!

    The girls:
Yours truly- from Nashville, TN. Generally when on relay teams with the guys, I'm by far the slowest of the group, so generally I'm given the shortest distance. Considering all the legs are pretty tough, I'm sure I'll be the wild car.

Jodi- representing the west coast, L.A. Ca Jodi is the life of the party!! I met her first time for Vegas Ragnar and she wore me out. Pace wise, I think her and I are pretty similar. She's got a much greater mileage base than I do, so I'm going to say I'll be slower than herself

Katy- coming in from the windy city, Chicago, IL, she is the only one I haven't met yet. Solid proof that it is not easier to be faster when you're tall. She's a freakin SPEED DEMON and stands barely at 5'0. Although we didn't get to meet up, she ran the Country Music 1/2 a few weeks back. Despite the heat and hills, she still whipped out a 1:39. She's definitely going to be helping bring down the average girl pace.

Coming up next- choosing my legs (we still don't know) and crazy outfits!
